1.0 Introduction

The Fourth Circuit's Information Technology Department  has implemented a secure Web-based remote access service using Citrix Secure Gateway. Staff can now have access to court applications and a Windows desktop which offers many of the features available from their normal court login from home or anywhere in the world.

Staff working at home (or potentially anywhere from any PC with Internet access) can use their Web browser to:

  • Use applications such as Word, Appeals,  and other Office applications running on the server, not the PC
  • Access their chambers files
  • Swap files between their local PC and the remote file store
  • Access their email using Outlook

Using the service is easy. All that is required is a PC and a standard phone-based or broadband-based Internet connection from any Internet Service Provider. Simply check that you are running an appropriate version of Microsoft Internet Explorer, use the Web to download and install a Certificate and the Citrix Web client file.

Please follow the instructions below to configure your PC to use the service.

2.0 Installation
2.1 Minimum Requirements

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Cipher Strength 128 (note: Internet Explorer 5.5 has been shown to work also, although version 6 gives better performance. In either case 128-bit Cipher Strength is required)

  • Citrix ICA Web Client.
  • Internet Connection.

* NOTE: You can easily check which version of Internet Explorer you are using, as well as the Cipher Strength. Simply start Internet Explorer on your PC, then from the Menu bar select “Help” and “About Internet Explorer”. An information box will be displayed with the Internet Explorer details, including Version number and Cipher Strength.

2.2 Obtaining Microsoft Internet Explorer 6

If you need it, Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 can be obtained by clicking below:

2.3 Obtaining and Installing the Citrix ICA Web Client

The Citrix ICA Web Client must be downloaded to your web browser the first time you access the service. You only need to carry out this installation once.

Simply click on this blue link ICA Web Client. This will begin the download of the ICA Web Client file to your PC.

Click on “Open” or "Run" (see above) and answer “Yes” when prompted to install the ICA Web Client on your PC (see below). Answer “Yes” if you are prompted to accept the Citrix License Agreement. You will have to restart your web browser once the installation is complete.

Your PC is now configured to use the service.

3.0 Using Citrix Secure Gateway
3.1 Logging On

The Citrix Secure Gateway service is easy to use. On the initial login page (https://la4th.org/) enter your username and password. If you are a staff member then you should enter the same username and password you use to log on to your PC at the Court.

After entering your username and password, click on the “Login” button. If your login fails for any reason, the relevant error message will be displayed above the user name in red.

After a successful login, you enter the “Citrix Portal” which offers the applications you use here at the court  (see below). Clicking on an icon will open your applications.

You should note that access from outside of the court is subject to the same acceptable use and other security policies as apply when you are working at the court.

3.2 Using the Applications

After clicking on an icon a number of windows will briefly pop up and close automatically as the remote application is launched. However, sometimes a "Launch.asp" window will appear asking you to "Open" or "Save" it, you can click "Cancel" on this window.

When the process is complete your remote application will be displayed (See Below) , please note that you can have more than one application open at a time. These applications will run the same as they do at the court.  (But maybe faster.)

Printing

Any files you print will print to your local printer, if our server has the appropriate drivers.  You can also select to print to your office printer at the court.

Internet Explorer

Although Internet Explorer is available on the Citrix Portal, for performance reasons it is recommended that you should run Internet Explorer on your local PC should you wish to browse the Internet.

3.3 Logging Off

You should always log off in the proper way i.e. click on "Log Out” in the upper right corner of the screen. If you are using the service in a non-secure environment (for example, on a PC which you do not own or which others may use) make sure to fully log out of the Citrix Portal window after each session.

IF YOU DO NOT LOG OUT PROPERLY OTHERS USING THE PC AFTER YOU COULD GET ACCESS TO YOUR FILES AND DATA.
